Ok I was told not to eat SOFT Cheese and to stay away from UNPasturized Milk Products during pregnancy. My last dr visit was a rush. Next time I go I will ask but for the time being, can someone tell me if it's safe to eat the following:
Cream Cheese
Cottage Cheese
(And the Most Important) Sour Cream

I think it has something to do with contracting a bacterial infection from unpasturized foods.

Also - I have to limit fish due to Mercury. They said something about shell fish too (b/c of a possible allergy problem w/ the fetus)...Does this mean no shrimp/crab? I know it covers oysters/scallops.

I'll ask when I go, but until then, can someone clue me in.

About the allergy thing. It wasn't really explained to me. I thought it was one of those things where if you ate shell fish they might form an allergy to it later, but it could just be b/c of the mercury content. I'm going to ask when I go =)

So as long as the milk used to make the cheese is pasturized, I'll be fine? They don't actually have to "pasturize the cheese" itself inorder for it to be ok? (Not compeletly sure how cheese is made tbh)

Cream cheese, cottage cheese, and Sour Cream are all safe - and great sources of calcium. Soft cheeses like Brie, imported feta, and other imported cheese (i.e. Mexico) are not safe. I'm not sure if they mean Shrimp&Crab - I ate both during all three of my pregnancies in moderation (once or twice a month) and my children are all just fine. They are thriving at ages 4, 3, and the 2 yr old twins.

I have heard that too... but bascially if you live in the U.S., there are such strict rules on unpasturized foods that most are safe to eat. I know sour cream is fine. Also, cream cheese and cottage cheese I am sure are pasteurized. The only one I am unsure on is blue cheese. That one I stayed away from.

As for shrimp and crab, I am not sure. I know a lot of fish you should stay away from because of the lead content.. such as salmon.

I ate all 3 of the cheeses when I was pregnant and so do my daughters when they are and never had a problem.

As for the shell fish, I can understand the oysters if they are not cooked but The rest should be alright in moderation. I have never heard of a fetus having an allergy.

Just look on the container. As long as it is pasteurized, which means it was heat up to a certain temperature you are ok to eat it. Soft cheeses are unpasteurized. As far as shell fish and fish go I wouldn't eat it. Not only for the mercury but for the higher risk of getting food poisoning. Also stay away from any nitrates which are deli meats and processed meat like hot dogs and pepperoni. They can also contain the bacteria listeria.God luck. You may discover new foods to eat or some ones that you didn't like to eat before.

Soft Cheeses: Imported soft cheeses may contain bacteria called Listeria, which can cause miscarriage. Listeria has the ability to cross the placenta and may infect the baby leading to infection or blood poisoning, which can be life-threatening. The soft cheeses to avoid include: brie, camembert, Roquefort, feta, gorgonzola and Mexican style cheeses that include queso blanco and queso fresco. Soft non-imported cheeses made with pasteurized milk are safe to eat.

Unpasteurized Milk: Unpasteurized milk may contain bacteria called Listeria, which can cause miscarriage. Listeria has the ability to cross the placenta and may infect the baby leading to infection or blood poisoning, which can be life-threatening. Make sure that any milk that you drink is pasteurized.

Cottage cheese, sour cream, and cream cheese are all safe. Avoid brie or other soft cheeses. Shrimp is technically a shellfish, so it is best to avoid it. In moderation, it will likely not be harmful. Good luck!

When in doubt it is best to avoid those foods for now. I know some crab and shrimp can make you sick so..I wouldnt eat it just to be safe. Dont take anyones word for what foods are safe on here, best to call your DR. Make a list for your DR for next visit of all the foods in question or call DR office and have your DR call you back. If you question it dont eat it. I know yogurt is good. i remember eating sour cream with mexican food. Congrats in your pregnancy and all the best to you. Hope my info was helpful-- Mother of one. :)
