If there is already a broadband service, then it's obvious that there is an Cable/Broadband router installed by the broadband company. Additionally you'll need to install a wireless router on your own and set up the wireless network. Once that is done, you need to test your laptop if it can pick up the signal. If it does not then there's some problem with the wireless network or your laptop needs a external wireless card. You can go to www.netgear.com or www.linksys.com for more information on wireless cards or visit microsoft.com to get more information on setting up a wireless conncetion at home.

1. If your laptop has a built-in wireless adapter, and it should be able to pick up any wireless signal within range.

2. Broadband access can be provided via 2 methods - wired or wireless (or both). Assuming that your flat has the necessary wireless equipment installed for all tenants, your laptop should be able to pick up the wireless signal. If not, you may need to get a wireless router.

3. Even if you get a wireless signal, it may not be free. That is, you may need to subscribe to the service and sign on to your account before you get internet access. Think of it as having a telephone set. If you do not subscribe to a telephone service, you won't be able to make calls even if you plug it into the wall socket.

On the other hand, I understand some property developments may package free internet access to attract tenants. If that's the case, brilliant! But because it would be a shared network, be sure to install firewall software on your laptop to protect yourself against attacks.

you need to make sure that your computer has a wireless card installed, and that the flat has a wireless router installed. If both of those are present, you are all set to go online!

You need a wireless router. Your ISP are likely to send you one for free if you ask them nicely.
