but the shop assistant says if he's only 8 it's not a wise move cause the games are mainly for over 12's and they are quite delicate and can't really withstand an accident like dropping or whatever. I'm wondering what to do or can anyone suggest a more robust alternative?

Don't listen to a shop assistant ,look at the games available half the ones from ps2 are on psp you can play films on the psp and listen to music ,you can also buy a case to carry it in and get a screen film protector if you think the games are unsuitable try a nintendo DS.
All handhelds will get get bumped about and i'm sure you can tell your child to be carefull with it when my son got a psp he wasn't allowed it out of the house for the first few months in case he left it anywere but he's been fine.

ok, boring dad here...our kids all wanted megadrives and playstations..and i said no. theyve had PCs since they were 3. jessica could type command lines in dos before she went to school, and now, instead of just playing games on a games console, they understand computers, and more importantly they know how to use them. and you can still get all the games you want...

but im a boring old dad...

It depends how smart your child is (no offence). My girlfriend's son got bought one and I was suprised at how robust and well made it is. I think that unless your son dropped it in the bath or down the stairs it should be fine........

Get him a big toy car instead, with rubber tyres and working suspension! I had a Dukes of Hazzard car like that when I was 8, I loved it to bits!

Teach him to read and enjoy reading good books.

I used to read the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis to my daughter when she was that age, and she's now an avid reader at 25 years old.

Nintendo ds. Cheaper, more robust and better kids games.

If you're worried about it you might want to try to find something that's still fun but for younger children that won't need too much care for so he can still enjoy it and not hurt it.

Good luck :)

Get him some kind of games console for now. PS3s are meant to be out in a few months, you could get him one of those.
