Why in the world is it becoming next to impossible to adopt a pet. A kitten is preffered by our son (me too-my husband's not too keen on cats-but I am a BIG cat lover, in fact a big animal lover and he respects that and tolerates me for it so far as well)my husband wants to "get" a Staffordshire bull-terrier (I am a dog trainer BTW), you dont just "get" a dog, you must buy such a breed, unless you are REALLY lucky and find one up fo adoption-I've voiced my feelings, as well as my son to my husband, and he agrees we should adopt "a pet in need"-Step#1 finially out of the way,,-but since well over 5 weeks ago, I have posted a "looking to adopt a pet.,even an old(er) pet...............etc." in our local newspaper, on our local internet for our county, asked vets in our area-i e-mailed the Blue Cross for animal homing, no replies!-I have e-mailed "sponsor a dog" (even though they are looking for sponsors only on the tv ad, they have alot dogs in need of a home)I'd take an expectant cat!!

As I was saying, I'd take in a pregnant cat, if one was in need of a home-I'd take any cat/kitten regardless of age, or perhaps problems, like a 3leg-cat or dog (no joking,so please dont joke back) We truly want to adopt a cat-We could make a simple phone call and adopt a beautiful "Russian Blue cat"-or-Persian",etc.-THAT would get a pet into our home within 24 hours, I am sure-Thats not what we want, in lieu of the amount of needy pets, and the high number of pets that are being put down for lack of space left in the animal pound, animals of abuse, etc. Why is it so hard???? BTW, just moved to UK near London 9 months ago from abroad.

Don't you have an animal shelter near you that you could visit? They're usually over run with animals needing a home. You would have to pay a fee that covers initial shots and neutering but it's usually not too much.
I really think your best bet is to just go to a shelter or SPCA. They may be so busy taking care of the animals in their charge that they don't have time to reply to e-mails.

I have been trying to adopt guinea pigs and got no replies from rescues. It is sometimes really difficult to adopt a pet from a home. We live in a flat and although we have enough time for a dog we wouldn't get one. So: I had one from the local paper, although I would have loved to rescue a dog. Anyway, I am really happy with our lovely doggy.
Last week I went to animal shelters around Manchester and also got no helpful response. I wonder why that it. I want to foster a pet as we are moving into a house soon and found this charity around the north-west of the UK, so if someone wants to foster a pet and help out children, paws for kids is a good charity.
Recently I have been to a pet shop to buy some hay and there were those mothers with there kids looking at rabbits. It was disgusting, because they were looking at the pets as some thing. One mother was complaining that the bunny had peed itself and didn't want it. The shop worker had to catch every single bunny for her to have a look at it, it was as if she would buy some shoes. Those are the people that give their pets to shelters at some point, because they are bored of them.
Having a pet means for me having a friend that I care for until it dies. I don't care how it looks like or how old it is, etc. At the end of the day, an animal is something to love.
I really like your attitude and wish more people would have such respect for animals.
Good luck with the search, maybe the right dog or cat finds you...

Sometimes you can find adoptable cats on Catster (www.catster.com). It's an international cat lovers site. And the Humane Society has tons of animals up for adoption, although I do not know if they exist in the UK. I'm so hurt that animals are put to sleep, because they are "unwanted." If I had a mansion, I'd rescue more, but we already have 5 from the Humane Society. We got them while we lived in a house. And practically all apartments allow a maximum of 2, but I didn't and couldn't give them away just because of that. It would have been too heartbreaking for me, especially knowing that they faced the risk of being put to sleep if they didn't find a new home within a certain time frame.

I have a dog that you can have. But I live in Memphis TN. I'm not abandoning her, she's homeless I think. She came up one day and won't leave. I've tried to find a rescue for her bot no one will take her. She needs some place to live.

It's not next to impossible - most breeds have rescue clubs for their breed. If you want a Staff, check with the breed club in your area or the national club. They'll have info.

i quite agree they are willing to take your money for the pets that they cannot afford to keep, but they wont let you adopt one.
i suggest the RSPCA shelters, you may pay over 60 pounds for a dog but after what they have been through its well worth it.

You might need to look into a breed specific rescue for your area... looking for breeds in the SPCA is hard, especially if you have something in particular in mind.
Here's a linkie or two:

http://www.dogpages.org.uk/breeds3.htm
And for kitties:
