I'm considering moving into a development with an HOA. I'm curious about people's experiences...both good and bad.

Depends on the development and the association/management company.

I've been living in a townhouse for many years and have had no trouble with the HOA or the decisions of the Board of Directors. It's a good idea though to attend as many open meetings as you can because it's a good way to get your voice heard if you have suggestions and foster favorable relationships with the Board and management company.

Make sure you follow the rules of the HOA, if you don't you'll have a little trouble.

My wife Bobbi was an ousted HOA president, she had a bit of a power trip though. We had to move in disgrace.

Make sure you read and understand the by-laws before purchasing someplace with a HOA.And make sure you can live with the rules.

I have lived in a couple and did not like either. The board was alway very nosy and snooping. They would fine you for things such as having a broom on your patio, recommeded we all purchase matching window treatments, outlawed grills on the patios, etc.

There was also discrimination to anyone who objected to their rulings. They were singled out as the "trouble makers" in the community.

I would not purchase another place with one but I am sure there are advantages as well.

The HOA with my condominium are nice people and usually get everything done pretty quick. As long as you do what they ask then you will have no problems.

UGH. Aviod at all costs. I had one at my last condo. They are like having a grumpy landlord but they can fine you. They make rules( mostly ridiculous). Avoid!!!
