drink lots of water, and eat bananas. I think you should have picked a different sport if you are not in sports shape. When I played football I was in great shape and I told a couple of cross country people I would run with them for practice one day. I tell you what those fools sure do run alot my butt was exhausted.

Run at a pace that you can talk at. If you run with a team mate and talk at the same time, the miles will also fly by before you know it. If it is hard for you to talk, slow down a little. Save the faster running for your first meet. Don't just drink water - use a sports drink - preferably Ultima, cytomax or something similar or use a sports gel (GU, powergel, etc.) Gatorade is ok for some people but it doesn't have the best sugar - try to find something with maltodextron in it. Drinking a sports drink or eating gels and pacing yourself will keep you from fainting!
I hope that you will have as much fun as I did in cross-country! I wish you the best of luck!

I know how you feel, since I was in the same situation that you are in now when I was in high school and starting out with X-Country.
First, don't try to impress anyone on the team, guys or girls, especially if you don't have the ability to do so.
Second, don't overdo yourself, since it's the 1st of many practices, and maybe even the 1st time you will run for a significant distance.
For the 1st time you practice for X-Country, you should run only until you stop feeling comfortable.
Especially on high-humidity days, keep hydrated every chance you get, and run in the shade if possible.
Finally, don't be too nervous or take this too seriously since it's only the 1st of many practices.
When it comes to races in a few weeks, apply all these tips as well, especially the last one.

Good luck and keep on running!

don't eat too soon before you run.. bring water with you... and don't try to keep up with everyone. they will understand that it is your first time doing this.. you need to build up endurance. also, there is usually a faster group and a slower group.. so try and stay with the slower, but if you can't don't get discouraged. i used to not be able to run 3 miles, but now i run 6.. but it takes time

good luck!

Run a pace you are comfortable with, don't push yourself to try to fit in with the group if its outside of your comfort level. Make sure you have eaten breakfast too.
