The only vitamins you can overdose on are A, D, and E, the fat-soluble vitamins. They are retained by the body. Do not take more than the recommended amount. And yes, that bit about a few bites of polar bear liver is true!
I disagree that a balanced diet provides all the vitamins you need. Our crops are grown on depleted soils; chemical fertilizers do not replenish all the nutrients the soil has lost. Freezing and canning destroy as much as half the original vitamins as well. White bread, white rice, white pasta etc. have had all the B vitamins milled out of them. Humans and guinea pigs are the only mammals that don't manufacture their own Vitamin C. I could go on, but you get the idea...
Vitamin deficiencies manifest in various and subtle ways that we don't connect with poor nutrition. My advice: for optimum health, continue with a sensible supplementation plan.

While some vitamins are perfectly fine to use in large quantities, for example you can't overdose on Vit. C, your body eliminates it, others can cause you ill health if taken in overdose, for example Vit. B.
You should probably also be aware that nothing beats a healthy diet, preferably organic, and that most of the vitamins you take go straight down the loo. For your body to assimilate vitamins and minerals, they need to be taken in a natural setting, for example, to absorb calcium, your body needs magnesium, both would be present in the right proportions in say, spinach, whereas in pills they are not which means your body is just not assimilating them. Waste of money if you ask me!

When taking vitamins and supplements it is very important to seek out those of highest quality and are totally natural then you shouldn't have a problem. Those that you purchase in supermarkets, health food stores, "drug" stores, etc. are usually of very poor quality. They use artificial color, sweeteners, preservative and other additiives and they are not required by law to list all ingredients. Even those that state that they are natural can be as little as 15% natural and be legally listed as natural.
I take a lot of supplements as well and have never had anything but good results but I did seek out, and after much research, what I consider to be a totally reputable company.
Hope this is helpful.

Vitamins are required only in small quantities.A balance food including milk, cereals, fruits and vegetables will give all your daily requirements of vitamins.Take vitamins only if a deficiency is noticed by doctor and recommended.Increased use of Vitamin B complex may be harmful.

Yes, absolutely. It's called hypervitaminosis.
Vit A, can accumulate in your liver. Amino acid, stronger your cell metabolism, you'll get elder. Betacarotene, will yellowing your palm. Vit C will reduce your kidney function, etc.
Get start with healtier life, reduce vitamine usage. Why need vitamine if you are still young, except doctor recommended.

If they are water soluble vitamins - no problem, just expensive pee.
Fat soluble vitamins - be very careful, they are not excreted and will accumulate. This has been known to be fatal (albeit rarely). Minerals, don't take more than twice the recommended daily dose.

Adell Davis who wrote many books advocating taking alot of vitamins and supplements died of cancer in middle age. She was not the only one. I personally know people who the same happened, however, my aunt who smoked her whole life used them too and she lived into her 90s...

One thing no one has mentioned is that vitamins and standardized supplements are made using chemicals. It takes chemicals to isolate chemicals. I know an engineer who worked at a vitamin manufacturer. He said they use acetone and benzene to isolate the vitamins. No thanks. I'll stick with herbs and a sensible diet.

If you have a good diet of all the foods that we all know are healthy, ( fruits, vegetable, grains, fish etc.) you don't need vitamins. My cousin was a vitamin and supplement junkie and she died of pancreatic cancer. It turned me off them for sure.
