Know about IP phones??

Question

I am working in technology this year......still learning. Does anyone know when you have a brand new ip phone straight out of the box, set it up on pc, how do I get an ip address to enter in the phone for the extension I want? When I enter an ip address, it says ip address conflict (guessing this one is already being used). I know that when you change phones, you have to reset it and enter the ip address then. I went to configure, services, ip telephony, ip terminals, nortel, ip term status tab, this is where I am stuck. Normally I write down ip # on ext I want, but don't know it.

It depends on what phone system you have, what network you're on, and several other factors. We just installed a voip system and it took a configuation change on the server to assign addresses. I recommend you post your question at http://groups.google.com/ with as much detailed information as possible.

You didn't say what brand or type of IP Phone you have. If you purchased the phone from Vonage or Net2Phone then they supply the phone number automatically and your phone picks up your IP address automatically. Although there are instructions for manually setting the IP Address if needed.

If you just purchased one IP Phone - just the phone, then you will need another Phone to talk to. Some IP phones allow you to enter the IP address of the other phone to setup a call between the two phones. Otherwise you will need a "Call Manager" Software to handle the IP phone with other IP Phones.

I use the VoIP interface from http://www.lingo.com
My Linksys router assigns an IP address based on DHCP. That has worked perfectly for over 2 years.
Since the interfaces will work well with only one phone connected, I recently got me a Panasonic KX-GT6502B with 4 cordless phones, and I can now have as many as 5 people talk to someone outside at the same time.

Is this at work or is it at home?

If at work talk with Network Administrator.

If at home, use a private IP address.

At the command line type, ipconfig /all

This will tell you IP address of your computer and more.

If you are on a network segment of 192.168.0.n where n is some number between 2 - 254 replace n for the IP phone with a number not in use.
