Medical consultant:
To the consultants patients .... a highly paid professional person who you have to wait a long time to get an appointment, who then keeps you waiting, when you actually see the consultant, he/she spends a high proportion of the time talking about the recent weather or some other equally irrelevant topic and barely touches on the subject which was the reason for the long awaited appointment. In the few minutes spent with you 'explaining' things he/she uses terms that no-one except a fellow consultant would understand and then leaves you with a nurse who is used to patients being confused after their consultation and will go through it all with you in English as you know it.
To everyone else who knows him/her ... a shark.

Other consultants: people that want to earn a lot of money giving their opinions and advice in a subject they have studied and/or gained experience in.

A consultant is an authority that companies hire to come in and help them with a particular problem. Example, a sales consultant can be hired by a retail concern to motivate the sales staff. Over simplified, but that's the way it is.

A Consultant is someone that knows more about the subject than you do, and gets a lot of money for that knowledge!!

Consultant is certainly a specialist in Medical feilds:

But when you ask, the first thought to hit me is ........ Me.

As a business Consultant, I may go to troubling businesses, analyse them and advice on what to do to fix it. Alternatively, I go to businesses who are looking to grow, look at their current setup and advise on what they can develop.

I suppose a Consultant is a specialist in any feild (Medical or Business) who can use their specialist knowledge in relation to a presented situation.

One who consults
someone who is an expert in some field.
If I am working on some project, and some detail of my project is not within the realm of my knowledge, I ask someone who is an expert in that area- a consultant, usually they get a fee for their knowledge.

I've seen a few consultants. All medical. Almost all hopeless.
You could consult in any field though.

it would be interesting to know what countries the other answers are from, to see if there's a significant difference!
