My dad taught me to drive. He put me behind the wheel of a 1950 Ford truck, that you had to push the clutch in twice before it would change gears. Then I traveled 1.5 miles of a one lane gravel road. He always told everyone he wasn't scared because he had a coat of armor on. When on an outting, he would quiz me on road signs, what they meant, and criticize when i didn't obey the laws of the road to the fullest extent. Still today when I get in my car to go somewhere, I remember something he used to say to me; "An automobile has no feelings whatsoever, and it won't pick a certain time or place to kill you." Foolishness was not optional ! I have also heard it said, find a big open field and give it hell. I passed both my tests the first time. Learn and drive with care.

I learned thru a class at school when I was in the 10th grade. Then after the class we did drivers training thru a school instructor and car. We then got a permit after a written test then drove with family until we felt comfortable..then took the drivers test when I turned 16. Passed the first time but really didn't get to drive alone for a few years.

Both! My cousin and I took driving lessons at the same time from the same instructor, was fun that way. I think it was once a week for a month or something. The drivers ed in my school didn't teach you anything and my mom was a bit of a spaz, so it was definitely the best choice for me. I really enjoyed it, and I learned all sorts of useful things and was really confident when I went to take the test.

They taught us to drive in school when I was a teen. You didn't have to pay for it and got credit for taking the class. It was totally fun, because there were two steering wheels and brakes in the car, one for the student, the other for the teacher. Our teacher was also the head football coach and he didn't hesitate to slam on his brakes or yell or any of those things coaches are known to do. It was totally hilarious. I passed the first time. The written test I made 100 and the driving test a 98. They won't give you a 100 on the driving test. At least they didn't use to.

The school did it. It was terrible, as I spent most of my time looking at the boobs of the girl sitting next to me (I was 16! Gimme a break!)
It took me two semesters because I came down with Rubella and could not finish the class in time.
I failed the first test, as I made a bad move at the very last moment and was flunked.
I passed on the second time (with the exact same score from the first test)

I learnt from a driving school and passed first time.
I wouldn't advise you to learn with a relative or fried because you can easily pick up their bad habits, miss out on things that are important to learn and whet the test instructor is looking for e.g. checking mirrors every few seconds...etc
I dont thing my driving would be different because once you pass you develop your own style in driving.

My husband taught me, in a small town built on a hillside, in a stick shift car.
It was hell.
I turned into a driver that can handle just about any vehicle, and I doubt that a different instructor could have made that any more true.
I believe it took about a month, maybe more (that was 30 years ago).
I went to a different town to take the test - one which didn't have hills - and passed. LOL.
I do recommend, however, that if you have a choice, you do not let a spouse teach you.

My mom taught me when I was 15. Took drivers ed (required by the state) when I was 16. Was a horrible experience, my partner in drivers ed almost killed us going the wrong way on a 2 way road. The class was 3 days, and I passed on the first try.

I had instructors show me how to drive and they were not all that great however when I got my own car I started driving on the down low and that's how I eventually learned. One day I decided to take the bull by the horns and then I got my license a week later.
