Yes yes yes yes YES! The glue, actually. MMA or non-MMA; it seeps into your system, and will eventually cause all sorts of damage. Not to mention that most shops will give you, in time, fungus and infections. Don't wear them. Don't get manicures or pedicures in little stripmall shops.

Too much polish or anything that covers the nails takes away the ability for the nails to breath. Also, if any bacteria gets under the false nail during the time it is put on it can cause an infection in the nail.

I've gotten acrylic fingernails every month since I was 13 that was 5 years ago cuz my nails wont heal from the first time. they damage your nails so bad cuz they cant breath, and the chemicals used to put them on and take them off, and if you take them off yourself then they go down the drain and get brittal and really thin

Acrylic nails are very bad for your fingernails. They do not allow oxygen to flow and can cause the growth of fungus. Also, they weaken the nail bed.

Yes ... for various reasons:
They keep the air from your natural nails so they don't grow as well.
If not taken care of, they can develop fungus underneath
The glue that adheres the acrylic nail to your nail, will take off layers of your natural nail and it has to grow out from scratch to get back to normal.

heres a cutting from an article

Fake nails are created with either acrylic or a newer gel substance. The natural nail can be extended with a plastic tip, after which the gel or acrylic is applied on top of the natural nail and the tip. The substance hardens instantly into the shape of a new nail. A fake nail needs to be maintained by filling in the gap that develops as the natural nail grows. Technicians recommend filling every two weeks on fingernails and monthly on feet because toenails grow slower.
Once the nails are applied, many women feel compelled to keep wearing them. Acrylics slowly dissolve when bathed in nail polish remover, but the real nails underneath will be weaker and uglier than ever after being shielded by the plastic layer, many users say.
Fake toenails no longer require a trip to a salon, where a full set of toenails costs an average $40. Wal-Mart sells temporary plastic nails and glue for $5.
“I wear them,” said Marla Milligan, who works in Wal-Mart’s purchasing office in Bentonville, Ark. After the store started offering the toenails in 2002, she said, “I was skeptical about how they would feel. But they’re great; I’ve glued them on since.”
Heath, the graduate student, posted her experience on a foot-care Web site, arch-pain.com. She said she received more than 20 responses from people who told her that fake toenails also changed their lives. The podiatrist who runs the Web site, Dr. Robert Brodkin in Lamesa, Texas, says he would soon offer patients without nails a permanent option. He has invented a substitute toenail that can be connected to the foot bone with tiny titanium screws.
Many people live without nails on their big toes, Brodkin says, because the nails have been removed.
"Evolution has shrunk our toes. The toe bone has gotten smaller, but the nails have stayed roughly the same size,” he said. Nails can be surgically trimmed to fit the toe, but many family doctors recommend getting rid of the whole thing, Brodkin said.
Fake nails, however, increase the danger of infection. Doctors and beauticians warn that acrylics, gel and even regular nail polish traps moisture in nails, encouraging fungal growth, particularly on toes, which are confined to dark, moist, warm shoes for hours each day. Fungal infections can color the nails brown and yellow; can cause an odor; and can cause the nails to grow up instead of out.
For this reason, some beauticians hesitate to apply acrylic nails to feet.
“We discourage people from wearing them,” said Gina Morgan, a nail technician and instructor at the International School of Skin and Nailcare in Atlanta. “The hard surface lifts the natural nail, separating it from the nail bed, and can do serious damage.”
But many other beauticians promote them. Paul LaMarche, who works at the Varnish Nail Salon in Beverly Hills, Calif., gives pedicures to many celebrities and says acrylics with glitter are “rolling this sandal season.”
While ideal for open-toe sandals and flip-flops, the hard nail covers can pose problems when wearing other kinds of footwear. The strong and long artificial nails often don’t fit into closed-toe high-heeled shoes.
“I can wear tennis shoes and boots, but no stilettos,” Heath said. “It took me a while to get adjusted to, but now it is like anything else.”

yeah, it is. i'm a manicurist and i work with people who do artificial nails.. to get acrylic nails you have to drill/file down your nail bed which thins out your nail very badly.. your nails can't breathe and they're heavy on your nails. if anything i'd go with gel nails which you don't have to drill your nail down as much and gel is a lot lighter than acrylic. make sure that it's liquid gel and not powder gel.

yes, get gel nails, if your nails are really weak you might have to get acrlic, if they are not, and you just bite them alot, get the stuff that makes them taste bad, and put hardener on them everynight.
