look at their balance sheet and income statement. That will give you a clue. If you received an email telling you what a great stock it is, chances are about 1000 to 1 it is not.

Most stocks that are touted on line are worthless. It is likebuying a lottery ticket. Some one will win, chances are long it will be you.

Basic research into a stock should give you easy clues---P/E ratio should be lower than its peers, growth rate should be equal or higher. The company should have lowleverage and a history of stable management.

Research the stock. One easy and free place to look is Yahoo Finance, just put in the stock symbol and search away, they provide links to a decent bit of helpful information. If you have an account with a broker, you should also have access to a lot of research from them.
