How do you trim a crab apple tree to be more bushy....and when do you trim it?

Top it for more bushiness. Trim limbs too close to the ground.
Best to trim after the sap has receded. Never in the spring when the sap is rising. It will "bleed".

You really shouldn't let it get too bushy.You need it to get sunlight in the center of the tree to promote good fruit and flowering.If you really want it bushy,keep the top trimmed and trim all 3rd year growth,this will keep it sprouting from the center which is what you want

Each cultivar of flowering crab has its own characteristic shape. Some are round, some upright, some spreading, some vase-shaped. If you attempt to trim or shape it you will ruin its structure. Leave it alone - it will fill out of its own accord as it ages.

i dont know but if you add wood ashes seaweed manure and clear cutting creates bushy growth but dont hold me to it

I just cut all the sucker off with my pruners ( tiny twigs that grow straight up) and then I cut the bigger ones that grow straight up.
