I would like to know what skotch guard is.

its a fabric sealant to prevent liquids from soaking through and staining your fabric. like a wax on a floor. I believe it has a silicone base to it and if applied properly can work as a good fabric protector. Most sofa's have this already applied and some carpets do.

Seriously, Scotchguard is a chemical which is sprayed on soft surfaces (like apparel, furnishings, carpet) to repel dirt and stains. It is effective against some, but not all stains.

Scotch guard is a stain resistant chemical treatment used on wool carpet.

I use it to keep my clothes clean. I spray it on any new clothes item. It repels stains. It is a repellent.

it is a protective barrier to help prevent stains etc. It can be applied to almost anything.
