Most of the differences are very techinical (floating point support, etc.) and won't affect normal daily use.
As far as the being phased out, Intel and AMD are constantly trying to improve their chips, there is always something new coming down the pipe.

Really I don’t have small words to explain the difference between processors but these sites provide good information and benchmark of the processor.

If you are going to buy a laptop only for internet and CD,s and DVD buy something cheap like Intel Celeron or AMD Sempron, but if you want to buy something that last a litter longer go with older versions of Intel Pentium Centrino or AMD Turion the difference in price is not too much but this processor are better than the cheap one. I recommend to you to buy a mid – entry level laptop. Because if you decide to play or do any other application in the future the processor will help you. Anyway I recommend to buy a AMD base laptop like AMD TURION. They are outstanding processor and they are cheaper than Intel. Compaq/HP web site have great laptop for a good price. I recommend AMD.

basically, right now there isnt too much of a difference. they run pretty close together but run in different way making AMD favorable for gaming and other large programs while intel's design favors multitasking. for the normal things you want to do you can go with either one and be happy, because which brand you buy isnt the big deal right now, its what type (i.e. core duo, athlon x2, etc.) and yes, the p4's and athlons are being fazed out. or rather, to be more specific, the non 64 bit ones are. Intel DOES plan to eventually retire its entire pentium line and the pentium name in its entirty eventually, but not n the near future. Intel makes p4's with HT and 64bit support which will be manufactured for a while longer than the others but will eventually be gotten ri of. as far as athlons go, AMD is keeping the name but changing it to suit the type of processor, (i.e. Athlon 64 3800+, Athlon FX-60, Athlon X2 4400+, etc.)
Hope this helps!

it depends on the models you're looking at. there's not 'that' much known about the AMDs compared to the Pentiums. You can try Cnet to read reviews.
And like to rightly noted, some AMDs and all Pentiums are being phased out. With the emergence of the Centrino duos though, Intel beats AMD hands down (thats why AMD scampered to buy ATI to be more competitive).
Go with Intel. You wont regret it.

I stop worry about the AMD and Intel for a while. As long as you know what you need it for, that should be good enough.
I think it may be best to check the performance and reliability of the laptop maker instead of the processor, giving the same speed grade.
I change/upgrade computer every few year so I don't want to spend too much on a pc/laptop. Price get cheaper and cheaper every year. So it is not necessary to pay preminum if you don't need to.

Yes, p4's and athlons are becoming less common because of the 64 bit market (Vista will be released soon). AMD processors are generally better, but intel centrinos are nice because they extend battery life.

In most Magazins They run Neck on neck and only pussyfooters worry about the minor Differences.
And yes they all being replaced by new Modells (nothing has changed in that department) 1992(386)94-5(486) then pen1 then P2 then p3 and now one keeps on loosing track. DUO twin chips in one case
Take care

dear member,
either is good. AMD more for games, pentiums more for business productivity. but either is fine. AMD more bang for the bucks in the end. Athlon is good budget and won't be obselete for a few years to come.
kind regards,
ben

AMD products are better than Intel's, but Intel advertizes more so they are more expensive.
