how do you reset an ipod?

when I went to turn it on the screen didn't light up and it had a check mark on it and it said ok to disconnect do I reset it or should I do someting else with it and if should reset it how do I do it.

Hold down the center button and up on the wheel at the same time. Hold those down for about six seconds and the iPod should reset.

it still thinks it is connected with the computer so hold the menu and center boutton uintill you see an apple
