Sure! But you'll need someone to hit the ball back to you. My friends and I learned together last year. While we're not pros or anything, we get better every time we play.

Well maybe not at the very early stages but you can certainly develop some basic shots by hitting against the wall. Playing people better than you can also help improve your tennis and a ball machine would be handy if you want to practice by yourself. If you know the rules and understand the game you should do well. Ball Machines can help you as you can adjust it to give you different types of shots and set time limits as well. If you had tennis lessons when you were 9 I presume you know the basic rules of tennis. Good Luck and hope you make the tennis team!

You can grab a book and practice against the wall by yourself, but part of learning how to play tennis consist on reading your opponent, finding the open spaces and controlling the mental stress and that you can only learn by playing against a person.

At our town's high school they have these super tall wooden structures that are called "backboards." you hit it and it bounces back and you hit it again, etc. Instead of having to have a partner, you can just bounce it off the wall and learn different techniques.
My mom used to take us up there when we were little and we'd ride our bikes around while she practiced tennis on the backboards.
Good luck!

well, get a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig tennis lover, and ask him to play with you
every time he hits the ball at you, do something. if he yells at you and screams in pain, write in your secret notebook what you've done to upset him.
eventually, you'll learn what's acceptable and what's not. It's called trial and error, and it IS teaching yourself
