Check out the Better Business Bureau and the New York Stock Exchange. The BBB can still show companies that aren't very scrupulous but if they are a member, your chances are better. And if a company is publicly traded, it is for sure legitimate.

I also recommend checking out home businesses with the better business bureau to be sure they are debt free and in good standing. Once that is done, you have to consider what type of product you would be interested in marketing and which methods of marketing are effective in the chosen field.
