I read the Alchemist in its original Portuguese version (I was born in Brazil) and Veronika Decides to Die in its English version.
From the 2 titles I pick The Alchemist. It's a wonderful metaphoric tale that will leave you with a feeling of wonder and enchantment. I did not the 2nd book. It was too dry and dark for my taste.
I have a friend who swears that The Pilgrimage is wonderful. But I haven't read that one yet.
Good luck!
