If you have ripe watermelon already I am jealous! There are two ways to tell when it's ripe.
1. Thump it. If it rings or has a musical tone it is not ready. If it sounds "dead" then it is ripe.
2. The stem at the end of it will turn brown and kinda shrivel.
Also, you can check the spot where it lies on the ground. If it's yellow then that's another decent indicator.

A watermellon or any other fruit or large veggie is ready to gather, when the vine it has grown on is dry. It will have a light brown color. Then if it is not completely dried up, turn the mellon over and if it is white on the bottom. Then thump it gently and if it is hollow, then the three signs show that it is ready to be picked.

You thump it with you knuckle. If it has a nice, resounding, hollow sound, it's ripe. If it sounds sort of muted, or mushy, it isn't. Next time you're in the supermarket, thump a couple of watermelons and see what they sound like. Then thump a canteloupe, and you'll hear what an unripe watermelon sounds like.

I know its a pain to go by the hollow sound thing.......its easier to make sure all of it is a nice healthy green except for the area making contact with the ground......that will always be yellow. Listen to the sound made when you tap one that you know is not right and compare that to the sound made when you tap one that you think might be ripe!

With cantaloupes and honeydews and other melons, the smell will tell you!!!! If they get too fat, they fall off. Get a smaller one that sounds hollow, smells good...whack it open. If it's sweet and juicy, the others will be, too

honeydew and cantalope should sound hollow, not watermelon. Watermelon should sound like your knocking on wood.
