They are there to hurt your car. I had a motor mount go out on my car one time. The mechanic asked me if I went over a lot of speed bumps. I was living in an apartment at the time, having to traverse several speed bumps in the parking lot. I've noticed that other countries (Mexico) have speed "dips" instead of bumps. That seems like a cheaper way to go, but equally as annoying. Who invented these things is my question?

If your serious... I design traffic calming devices. Speed bumps are not traffic calming devices where speed humps, speed tables and speed cushions do have a valid place.
I've written many paper on traffic calming so I could go on for quite some time but, lets get to the bottom line.
Roads are designed to accommodate a specific design speed (85th percentile speed).
Speed limits are set on residential streets well below this speed.
Politicians, old people and young couple with kids complain when people drive faster than the posted speed.
You can... get everyone in your neighborhood to drive at or below the speed limit this will create a platooning effect as each household typically generates 8 to 10 trips per day (per ITE trip generation manual).
2- design roads for slower speeds like they used too
3- retrofit existing roadways with traffic calming devices that change you vehicle path vertically (speed humps) or horizontally (traffic circles, chicanes, and the like)

No one drives the speed limit. So to get you to slow down they put up speed bumps. Do you drive over them as fast as you can? I don't because I dont want to tear my vehicle up, so I slow down. Therefore the purpose of the speed bump has been accomplished.

In our subdivision the posted speed limit is 25 mph. You would be hard pressed to find anyone traveling slower than 35 mph, and a lot of people travel over 45 mph. Good thing those sign are posted so everyone knows what the speed limit is.

speed bumps are actually used in areas where high speeds are dangerous to OTHERS not just the driver. On many streets, the drivers will ignore the posted signs and keep on driving anyways.
Since cops are expensive as far as taxes go, let's just put up bumps to keep you going slower. Think of it as a lesson... you go too fast you hurt your car.
and yes they are annoying

you usually only see speed bumps in parking lots. As another person stated - people ignore speed limit signs.
In parking lots, especially of businesses they put them there to reduce any possible liability on themselves, for example; Say I strike a fellow employee out in the parking lot b/c I was driving too fast and that employee popped out between two cars and I didn't see the person. After that person get's done suing your insurance they go after the business b/c they didnt take any measures in order to prevent that kind of accident.

the purpose of % bumps is to discourage using too quick. the shape and length of the bump confirm how slowly a automobile might want to go over it to steer away from serious passenger soreness and ability damage to the suspension of the automobile. Bumps are used in residential elements and on deepest streets, extra infrequently on campuses and in the front of faculties. The aims are to shrink the noise of site visitors and to make stronger site visitors and pedestrian safe practices.

Keeps auto mechanics in business, because they'll screw the car up.
And I'd listen to the speed limit signs, if they were reasonable. But 55 on a highway where everyone's doing 70 is a joke.

the purpose of the speed bump is to slow down around the neighbors that have kids. i guess they only put them around the neighbor that they request for it for their children safety. this way it help reduce accidents.
