Have you checked the spark plugs? If they need to be changed,it will not fire up and keep running. It could also be your fuel pump.Mine has a filter that sucks in while it is running and causes it to die.Once you get it started, take it to a shop for a diagnostics on the car.

There's a whole line of diagnostics but I gotta know whether you are diesel or petrol, new or old, maybe the make and model. I am falling over with the collective nonsense being written since I logged onto your problem. It is a load of old cobblers. The replies are almost uniformly coming in from people who have NEVER been mechanics. The one about changing the alternator as a first option is so far off the wall I don't know what to say.
If I understand you correctly you can repeatedly start this car. It will run for a very short while and cut out. You can then immediately re-start and the whole cycle repeats.
IF THAT IS TRUE
there is nothing wrong with your plugs, battery, alternator, fuel supply [well maybe] and I can assure you it is not being caused by such things as the CDs stacked in the changer or the tyre pressure so you don't need to go there

It could be a number of things, but if you are 100% positive the battery is fine then it could be within the ignition system.
If it's a carburettor car, it might be an idea to change the distributor arm and cover, if that doesn't work, try replacing the leads and spark plugs, but before you pay for all this it might be an idea to see if there's a crack in the ignition casing, if so, damp maybe getting in, so spraying a bit of WD-40 could help.
Usually though, this is accompanied by a rough start.
If it's a fuel injection engine, it's most probably the leads or plugs. It might be an idea to take it to a garage so they can run it on one of their machines, I can't remember what the test is called now, but they will be able to pin point the problem.
This is just what the cause has always been in my experience though - it could be a massive list of things.

There is a huge laundry list of things it could be, but before you take it in for servicing, is it a newer car with a factory-installed security system? My car had the same problem, and the problem was with my key -- the security system got screwed up and didn't recognize my key. When that happens, the fuel pump shuts down and the car will start and run for about two seconds, then it'll die. If that's the case, you'll have to take it to a dealer to get it fixed, and it'll cost you at least $150.00 to have them re-program the security system. If your car is not a newer model with a built-in security system, take it to Pep Boys or some place that gives free estimates for a diagnostic exam.

make, model, year would be nice. Assuming you mean the car starts, then shuts off. It could mean the idle is too low, the fuel pump may be bad. Hard to say we need more detail here.
example, does it die immediately or does it sputter. does it matter if you give it gas or not.

Sounds like your carb floats have a leak and the engine is flooding. If you have fuel injection, then I'm sorry, I am not that familiar with it.
