Are you using your windows firewall? You can make sure it is turned on by going to your connection and go to properties>Advanced>Settings, and you will be able to change the settings. If you are using Windows XP this is free for you and is already installed on your computer, you just need to be sure to turn it on. This works great for me.

Windows XP comes with firewall. It is a good firewall. Go to the control panel to activate it

You probably already have a firewall in your windows program. If you have windowsxp go to your start menu, control panel, security center, and you will see your firewall. Click it on and make sure that it has not been disabled.

Windows built-in firewall is total junk. It only filters incoming packets and does nothing to stop bad outgoing packets. Take the advice of the others who suggested the free version of ZoneAlarm:
