2+8=9+?
subtract 9 both sides
2+8 - 9=9+?-9
(2+8) - 9=(9-9)+?
10 - 9 = ?
1 =?

11-?=12-5
Take out 11 both sides
11-11-? = 12 - 5 -11
(11-11)-? = 12 - (5 +11)
-? = 12 - 16
-? = - 4
Remove negative sign both sides
? = 4

Let "x" be the number that you don't know

2 + 8 = 9 + x
10 = 9 + x
10 - 9 = x --> (move 9 to the left side and dont forget to change the sign from positive to negative)
1 = x

The answer :
2 + 8 = 9 + 1

To prove:
2 + 8 = 9 + 1
10 = 10

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let "x" be the number that you don't know

11 - x = 12 - 5
11 - x = 7
-x = 7 - 11 -->(move 11 to the right side and dont forget to change the sign from positive to negative)
-x = -4 -->(divide both side by -1) and you'll get :
x = 4

The answer:
11 - 4 = 12 - 5

To prove:
11 - 4 = 12 - 5
7 = 7

2+8 = 9 + x anything you do to 1 side you must do to the other
2 + 8 - 9 = 9 + x - 0
1= x

11 - x = 12-5
11-x-11 = 12-5-11
-x = -4
divide both by -1
x=4

treat the ? as an unknown number and do youir things :

1) 2+8=9+?
subtract 9 from both sides
( i just learned that this is a property of the equality sign..... )

this will give you
2+8 - 9 = 9+? - 9
or 2+8 - 9 = ?
and Voila ther is your answer 2+8-9 = ? or 1 = ?

the other one goes the same ..

problem: 2+8=9+x
solution: put the unknown variable on one side and the rest on the other side. note that when you move a variable from one side to the other, the sign changes (from + to - and vice versa) so,
x=2+8-9
do the math,
x=1
thats the answer.

problem: 11-x=12-5
solution: x=11-12+5
answer: x=4
