Anywhere between 2 and 10% of the population - that's 6 million to 30million.
There's no reliable statistical analysis. Kinsey's report used a self-selecting sample - so his 10% is the top end of the scale.
Face-to-face surveys illicit many 'no' answers because people are embarrassed or in difficult situations, so they measure low - 2 or 3%.
The last US census showed around 5% of same sex households recording, but that doesn't tell us about single gay men/lesbians, and couples that prefer not to report their status.

I would say probably between 5 and 15 percent, but it's really hard to say. Many gay people are closeted. It's not like finding the percentages of Hispanics or African Americans, which are obvious. Many gay people hide their true nature. In other countries, I bet it's even harder to find a percentage, due to the homophobia.
