How much should I expect to pay for transfer from the international airport in Mumbai to at night time to Colaba? Do you think it is safe for a female travelling alone to take a metered taxi on her own from the taxi rank at the airport. Do most of the taxi drivers speak English? If not how to I tell the driver where I need to go?

Prepaid taxis at the airport are a safer bet as the police have a detailed record of all taxis leaving the airport and their destination.

When you exit from the arrival terminal you will see a kiosk for prepaid taxis . They will give you a voucher with your destination (colaba) and the taxi number you are supposed to travel in after you pay them the fare in advance. Most taxi drivers do know a splattering of English but if you have the voucher they will read the destination on it and take you there.Night fares are one and a half times day time fares and pre paid taxis are more expensive BUT I would recommend that you go in for a pre paid taxi. Also, if you are a lady travelling alone I would suggest you wait till about 5.30 before leaving the airport as it is better to be safe than sorry.

DO take the taxi from the prepaid taxi stand only, though it is more expensive as it is the safer mode of travel for tourists. Also, there is abus service run by the airport authorities up to Nariman Point.(very close to colaba) You can inquire about it at the airport as I am not certain if it still plys or not.

You can hire a car too but it will work out a lot more expensive than the pre paid taxis.

Even for travel in the city, remember to ask for the tarrif card and pay according to the amount corresponding to the number on the meter to ensure that you are not cheated. In Bombay taxi fare is PAID BY THE METER ONLY. There is no haggling and no extras ever . If a taxi driver asks for more than what is shown in the tariff card REFUSE to pay and ask him to take you to a police station. (Some will try and make an extra buck from a foreigner but at the threat of the police will grumble and settle for the tariff card fare)
Have a great time in Bombay and in India.Safe Journey too.

The best is to take a prepaid taxi from the Airport. It should not be more 700-900 Rupees. Request a guy who speaks English. It is fairly safe to travel till almost midnight to Coloba. it would be atleast 40 min ride from the aiport at that time. Most of the drivers of metered taxis do not speak english.
another option would be contacting your hotel or a travel agent suggested by the hotel. You can also contact hertz. Most rental cars rates in india include a driver. here is the contact info for hertz in Mumbai Intl Airport, its open 24 hours

Used the hotel hoppa many situations and suited and good service. i think of it relatively is 30 euros for a return holiday from Alicante airport to your inn in Benidorm. particularly reasonable fee and as good service as a taxi which could be approximately 80 euros for the comparable service. Have a stunning holiday, i went in June.

pre-paid cabs are best bet

u pay a little extra, but worth it at times
also, the onus of taking you to the right place is on the cab driver

if he feels like taking a few extra lanes, it's at his cost

>> should be approx. Rs: 400 - 500 at nite (Euro: 6.7 - 8.3)
a receipt is made out, detailing your destination address, cab no., your name, destination phone number ... and other details u'd like mentioned for safety's sake
1 copy is handed over 2 u, other 2 the cabbie and book copy 4 confirmation / records

find below, link which gives u an estimate / approximation

Negotiate the rate first, what ever the amount. Call your hotel, and ask them to make recommendations!
