True. Take your car to Costco for tire rotation. You will have green caps on all four tires.

Green Valve Stem Caps Nitrogen

2016-11-01 09:20:53 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

The TPMS (tire pressure monitor sensor) that is now included in many new automobile models is very sensitive to changes in tire pressure readings attributable to high temperatures. My new Mazda 6 sport was delivered by the dealer with regular air even though the manual required all nitrogen, something that was signaled by the green valve stem caps. After taking it in three times in three weeks, the dealer said that was nothing I could do except check the tire pressure each time and reset the TPMS each time if the readings were OK. I then went to a tire store, had the tires bled, and refilled with all nitrogen. I have not had a problem since and only check tire pressures monthly.

The answer is yes...the theory behind filling the tires with nitrogen is that it can increase mileage and reduce tire wear, as nitrogen does not react to temperature changes like normal air does (expanding, contracting, etc). The big problem is finding someplace to fill the tires with nitrogen, and also the cost. Plus, if you have a leak, you are losing money literally into thin air.

I personally fall on the "skeptical" side of this issue...I'd like to see some data showing significant improvement in mileage over someone who keeps their tires adequately inflated in the traditional way.

Hope this helped.

ASE certified tech:
nitrogen does not improve mileage, and it does expand and contract. this isnot why it is used. If nitrogen didnt expand, your engine wouldnt run.

nitrogen is used in pure form to prevent corosion inside the tire, and in hi performace applications, the expansion rate is easily calculated.

for the laymen, all it does is help your tires and rims last longer.

FYI Plain air is 78% nitrogen. How can going from 78% to 100% help?

Yes, Nitrogen inflation is supposed to help gas milage, because it keeps a constant pressure (does not expand and shrink due to the weather).

yes...

eg...costco fill tires with nitrogen and place green stem cap on.
