Pregnancy causes back strain because of the additional weight in front. As your stomache muscles get stretched out, your back takes on more of the load. Then the additional weight of carrying your baby in front of you and lifting her/him is continues the process and makes it worsen. If your baby weighs ten pounds, he/she is causing your back muscles to be constantly contracted to support your baby's additional weight.
You are now doing things that you are not used to that cause adfditional strain on your back like leaning over a crib, leaning over the sink while giving your baby a bath, leaning over while changing diapers, etc. Try to sit whenever you hold your baby or change its diaper and make sure that you don't spend extended periods leaning over the crib. Make use of a stroller when shopping or walking long distances. Make sure that your back is properly supported at all times when sitting or laying down.
When your baby is old enough, which should be pretty soon, get a baby carrier that goes on your back like a backpack instead of hanging in front of you.
When your back is feeling OK, do sit ups. Getting your stomach muscles back in shape will help reduce the strain on your back.

While you were pregnant you probably held yourself differently to usual because of the extra weight. This could have been the start of the problem and now you are having to carry your baby about and probably doing a lot more bending and moving in unfamiliar ways. Do some gentle back strengthening exercises and make sure you check your posture frequently. Bend from your knees not your back and try not to be hunched over when feeding the baby. Good luck and congratulations

i had a bad back after both my babies and I got referred to the maternity physio via my midwife/health visitor. The second pregnancy was the worst but the physio was brilliant. My hip had come out of alignment and although my hip didn't hurt my low back pain was caused by it. Also my pelvic floor needed work. Don't go to a chiropractor or anything a physio is perfect for this ailment. Hope it gets better soon. Mine is fine 90 percent of the time now and my baby is 18 months old and I am now having reflexology on my feet which is also brilliant.

Hmmm. It could be a pinched nerve. You could go to a chiropractor. Is the pain constant? Or just during certain times of the day (i.e. in the morning?) It could be poor posture or stress too. Maybe get a massage, do some back stretches and try to remember a good posture. Try those bean bag thingys that you can heat in the microwave and put that on your back - they feel really good.
