Plastics. About a century ago a scientist named Baekeland (sp?) was messing around with chemicals hoping to create an insulating material for electrical wires. Instead, he created a rigid substance that could be manufactured cheaply and could be formed into a variety of useful shapes. He called it Bakelite and it became the first commercially successful plastic.

cocaine, originally used as a drug to treat pain. and tnt. you can just imagine what happend the first time he discovered that. also the microwave was developed by a guy playing with radio waves who accidently melted his chocloate bar. Finally popsicles because a guy was mixing soda in his backyard, left it out overnight with the stirriing strings still in and overnight record lows frooze it. the guy remembered this a few years later and began selling eppsicles which are now known as popsicles.
