Schoenbein had a nitric acid spill on his lab floor . Mopped it up with his wife's towel or article of clothing and he got the fabric too close to an open flame and the fabric whooshed up in flames. cellulose nitrate explosive and smokeless powder was thus conceived.
Isaac Newton sat under an apple tree and a falling apple hit him on the head. It got him thinking about the "obvious" and got him to thinking, he derived the laws of motion.

Post-it notes were kind of an accident, as was Nutra Sweet and Viagra, but these accidents happened to people that were prepared to exploit them. Most inventions came about by people doing work toward the solution of a problem.

Plastics. About a century ago a scientist named Baekeland (sp?) was messing around with chemicals hoping to create an insulating material for electrical wires. Instead, he created a rigid substance that could be manufactured cheaply and could be formed into a variety of useful shapes. He called it Bakelite and it became the first commercially successful plastic.

cocaine, originally used as a drug to treat pain. and tnt. you can just imagine what happend the first time he discovered that. also the microwave was developed by a guy playing with radio waves who accidently melted his chocloate bar. Finally popsicles because a guy was mixing soda in his backyard, left it out overnight with the stirriing strings still in and overnight record lows frooze it. the guy remembered this a few years later and began selling eppsicles which are now known as popsicles.
