If you have 2 blacks and a white (wires) you just picked up a 3 way dimmer. Is it a slide lever or a knob?. this type only works with a 3 way switch. Go and get one with a black and a white wire. It should also have a green wire for ground. You can usually tell if you bought a 'single pole' or a '3 way' by the lack of "on and "off" on the toggle. If it does not have "on' or "off" on the toggle, it is a 3 way.

I assume you removed an old dimmer that was connected to 2 black and 1 white wire. Your new dimmer with only 2 screws does not connect to the white wire (neutral). The black wires should go to the two screws. If they are labeled line and load like another answer said, do that, but I doubt that is the case. The green screw should get a green or bare copper wire. You are sure you don't have one? How old is the house? If it is a metal box it may be grounded and you can connect a wire between the box and the dimmer.

If you look inside the switchbox, there are white and black wires. The white wires are called "neutral" and you should connect the Lutron's white wire to the other white wires.

The black wires are the "hot" wires and one of them brings power to the box and the other goes to the light. If you look at the Lutron dimmer, one of the screws should be labeled "Line" -- connect this wire to the black wire that brings power to the switchbox. The other screw connection on the Lutron dimmer should be labeled "Load" -- connect this wire to the black wire that runs to the light.

Obviously, you should have the circuit breaker off when installing this dimmer.

It will help greatly if you can provide more info such as 1) age of home/whether it has ground wiring at all, 2) is it a 3-way circuit-meaning that the light is controlled by more than one switch, 3) are the wires covered with its original insulation or are they wrapped with electrical tape, 4) did you take out the previous switch or did you find the wires hanging there?

you have 2 problems, no ground wire and the wrong dimmer switch. you need a dual stage dimmer, you have a single.

ask the guys at home depot for a dimmer to serve on a switch that is controlled in two locations.
