Nero, as Rome burned. His instrument was not the "fiddle", as the saying goes, but rather the Lyre.
His skill on this instrument was questionable, but no one wanted to be the turkey to raise his head above the flock and tell him so. Critics of the day didn't weigh in, but, I would have loved to see how the self absorbed Simon Cowell would have pronounced judgment.
