In the old days, sailors would be paid when their ships came into a port. They would go out eating and drinking. The more they drank, the more they spent! Most came back to their ships at the end of the day or weekend without any money. Hence, "spending money like a drunken sailor" means spending money like there is no tomorrow or spending money without abandon.

When sailors had been on the sea for ages the first thing they did when they got off the ship was spend and spend, sailors were given an allowance of alcohol a day instead of water as alcohol could be easily stored for long voyages.
So sailors were seen as Drunken sailors.

The Sailors have been out to sea for a long time so they want to party when they come on shore. So most of them spend a lot of their hard earnings or savings on drinking and the more they drink and buy drinks for everyone at the bar and bet on card playing and playing pool.I won't mention the other good time they spend money on,just say woman!!!

Just what it says. Sailors used to be notorious drunks - and would have a pile of money saved from being at sea for a long period of time. First port they hit - there went the money.
Now it's the mall and shopping sprees, or 'retail therapy'.

Well,,, since he's drunk, and therefore uninhibited, he would spend money out of control. Also I guess since he is a sailor and is at sea a bunch where there is nothing to buy, he'd also tend to go overboard (pardon the pun!) when he's in port where there IS stuff to buy!

when sailors pull into port, they havent had alcohol in a long time...so they get drunk. Also, while they are out to sea they continue to get paid, but have no place to spend their money.
