I think the mind is a product of the brain, but not identical with it. Mind incorporates the rest of the body as well. The body generates a shared electrical field with the brain, and it along with the sense are vehicles of external stimulation to the brain. The stimulated brain in turns creates that sense of reality, that is experienced as "mind" and that has been described as holographic. Holographic in the sense that in all aspects of mind, is the totality of the human experience that gave rise to it.
But the "sense of mind" is a passive concept. It suggests a static holographic image of reality. It doesn't account for our own self-awareness, the choices we make, and the learning that we acquire.
From a more philosophical point of view, there is another and more fundamental aspect of human existance that creates and inflences the "mind". That aspect is the "soul".
The functions of the soul are the intellect, memory, and will. These are active functions, expressing itself through the brain and body, that make us dynamic creatures who can think, become self-aware, make moral choices, and transcend ourselves.
Biological scientists may advocate strictly biological causation, but I wouldn't limit it to biology alone. There is much mystery about the human person.

I think it has to do with the brain as a whole but also it has to do with the Dopamine levels in the brain and the hormone levels that control all the function of the body and mind. I think sometimes these neurons in the brain that you speak of that are firing get messed up and send the wrong signals out, which in this case can cause all kinds of problems. If a person can find a way to put these wrong signals or the messed up brain conversation asleep, then the mind would be OK and their would be no physiological factors. This is what I think.

there's more, or at least more mystery. though there's a lot of interesting work in the will as purely physical/mechanical and efforts against 'cartesian theatre' i don't think there's been any good answers.
can someone get konked on the head just the right way and get "mind damage" or "will damage" as a result? so much brain has been physically mapped (lingual areas, memory, etc.) but we're still no closer to knowing where (if 'where' is a fair question) the "you" that's you (i.e. the decision-making, autonomous part of your brain) occurs.
for some interesting takes check out hofstadter, daniel dennett, etc. (apologize if i spelled those wrong)

Is that the conscious mind, or the unconscious mind ?
Consider the terms 'conscious' and 'unconscious'. The conscious mind is unaware of the workings of the unconscious mind. It can't see it. It is blind to the unconscious. The unconscious is invisible to it. When we awake from a dream, moving suddenly from an unconscious to a conscious perspective, we find that we suddenly can't recall what just a moment earlier had been so fully engaging- the dream we were just "in". We can't see it any longer, because we are now experiencing life through the conscious, and the conscious CAN"T SEE the unconscious.
The unconscious, on the other hand, can see EVERYTHING.
Why do we call that which is conscious of everything, the "UNconscious" ?
Because that part of the mind which names things, named itself "the conscious", and named THAT WHICH IT COULD NOT SEE the "unconscious", In fact, it is the CONSCIOUS which is the most UNconscious, because it is less aware that it is a partner of the unconscious mind.

that's no longer conceivable to be conscious of, somewhat - because of the fact the way which our strategies shops instruction is complicated and poorly-understood. yet, there are an predicted a hundred billion (10^11) neurons contained in the strategies, each and every doubtlessly capably of forming a synaptic connection with a pair different neurons - meaning there are 10^22 conceivable synapses. modern thinking means that one synapse would approximate to one "bit" of instruction (that's basically approximately truthfully lots greater complicated than that, yet that's in all probability a solid approximation). One byte is 8 bits, so this would be a million.25 x 10^21 bytes, or a million.25 zettabytes, or a million.25 million terabytes of instruction storage. different estimates state that at anybody time, there are around a hundred trillion (10^14) synapses contained in the human strategies - so this could provide a greater modest memory technique of 12.5 terabytes. yet to place all of this into attitude - the human strategies gets approximately seventy two gigabytes of instruction from the eyes *each and every 2d*, and it effectively methods *all* of that instruction. and that's basically from the eyes. From calculations based on the processing velocity of the human retina, and up-scaling that to the type of neurons contained in the strategies, we are able to estimate that the human strategies performs approximately a hundred million MIPS (Million pc classes in line with 2d ). this suggests that the strategies is nearly a 168,0000 MHz Pentium pc. i could say the spectacular ingredient in regards to the human strategies isn't in hassle-free terms it somewhat is "problematicchronic length", yet in addition it somewhat is processing velocity.

The mind is extremely special storage machine.
I really don't want to call it evolution, just chance. Not suvival, but creation. There was no "intelligent" creation, nor purposeful creation, it was statistical creation. Due to inate survival mechanisms remembered in the genes of every ANIMAL on this planet, we humans and the minds we possess will obey our primal urges.
The "higher" force that calls out to us, is imagination. The desire for more, the desire to live easier, and free of fear.
