New Jersey would be the same as Michigan (where I live). Late August to mid September is the best recommeded time period, even better than early spring because the temperatures are not rising but beginning to moderate, which allows for more ideal moisture retention in the soil. This is just about the time to do it, but if the weather man calls for another stretch of 90+ degree days, you may want to wait til after that so that you don't run the risk of burning/drying out your newly germinating grass seed. But if you have an automatic sprinkler system that won't matter much. Good luck!

I am in the same area. Best here is Fall so the seeds can get a good start without being burned out by the intense sun of late Spring or Summer. Next best is in the early Spring.

I used to seed mine in the spring, simply because the spring is the wettest time of the year. It cuts down on watering with the hose and you don't have to worry about laying seed down during a water restriction. Seemed to work everytime. I live in NJ too!

Best time to start is the last week in August, and you probably want to finish seeding by the end of September.

I have always heard that the third week in September is best.
