Alexander the Great with his conquests spread hellenism (Greece=Hellas) to the Eastern Mediterranean. Also, when the Romans conquered Greece in 146 B.C., scholars commented that "the conquerors were conquered" by the Greek spirit and system of thought. The Ancient Greeks also had colonies in the Mediterranean basin, the Black Sea and Sicily mostly because of commercial transactions (metals, etc.)
The Ancient Greeks contributed greatly in the development of the Western civilization. The Arts, Philosophy, Democracy, the use of logic, architecture, science, mathematical thought, athleticism, flourished in Greece in the 5th century B.C., an era which came to be known as the Golden Age of Pericles.
Plato, Aristotles, Socrates, Zenon, Herakleitus, Thales, and so many others have left indelible marks in world science and philosophy.
"...5% of the English vocabulary comes from Greek directly, and about 25% indirectly." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_words_of_Greek_origin"
However, with the advent of Christianity in Greece, Greek rationality and philosophy was stifled and ancient temples and statues were intentionally destroyed and burned down as symbols of idolatry and blasphemy.
