I just got a degree in Spanish, & many people tell me that my degree means nothing and that no one is gonna hire me on a job. Why do only scam jobs hire just ANYBODY?

Unfortunately, those of us in the humanites ask this question all the time (see 95% of my own blogs). I have a BA in English Writing and an MA in Africana Studies. Know what I'm doing, 8 months out of graduate school? I'm a secretary for the NCUA. In other words, I'm getting underpaid to do something I'm far overqualified for.
A college degree (I'm assuming you mean a bachelor's) doesn't mean much anymore because a lot more people have one. It's the new high school diploma - most people have one. A degree in a specialized field that is not essential to most people (i.e., Spanish or Africana Studies) will only help you find a job within that niche. Even so, it's slightly damning if you don't have experience with whatever you're trying to do. The trick is to blend education and experience, always balance them out, and always stay as close to your field as you can, even if it's volunteer activities or whatever.
As far as your question about scam jobs go, I assume you're talking about mystery shoppers, work from home, yadda yadda. They'll hire "ANYBODY" because they realize that you've got to be pretty stupid to take one of those jobs. Also, they don't care what your background is because they can just train you how to do whatever sh*t work they want to you to do in a couple days at most. The pay is, like you say, usually nothing short of a scam, there's no benefits I'm sure, and it's not something you really want highlited on your resume. They'll take anyone cos all they need is a body, not a mind. Hope this helps.

As the economic standard of living continues to increase, education levels will also increase accordingly. When did a high school diploma get you a job? Well it use to be that big of a thing 60 years ago. Now your associates degree is basically equivalent. Also pick a degree in which there are job openings and that any "Joe Blow" can't learn it. Many many people can speak Spanish without a degree, not many people can build rockets without one though.

Most people have a degree in something, you have to be better than most people by having a specialty degree or experience related to your degree to get a good job. For you, a degree in Spanish can be useful in different ways: Go back to school to be a teacher or longer to be a professor of Spanish. You could also use this to be a private tutor or a translator. It really depends on what you want to do with your degree.

You should definitely be able to find a job, if you speak a second language. There are a ton of jobs that need Spanish/English speakers to translate, and offer other types of aid.

What were your original plans when you decided to major in Spanish? You could always look into teaching ESL. Other jobs that are usually looking for a bilingual person are the police force (a shocking amount of police forces use the equivalent of "picture books" to communicate with people who don't speak English.). There's also the government (the FBI), any large companies who deal with the public (Think AT&T), and colleges.

You can also be a private tutor--there's a lot of money in that!

The problem isn't so much that degrees don't mean anything anymore (because actually they do...where I live it's pretty much impossible to find a decent job without one) it's just that you don't have a degree in the desired area. When you decided that you were going to be a Spanish major, why was that? At that time, what did you plan to do with it when you graduated? Did you have a plan for this degree when you began your education?

I think a college degree will get you far - absolutely. But its not always necessary to get a degree. I have a very good paying job - I make more then some co workers with a masters degree. So a college degree can get you far but even if you dont have one its not the end of the world. You just need drive and ambition to learn

.because employer value who you know and what experiences you have. if you are fresh out out college just with a degree, most likely you're not hire. you should networking while getting your degree so that way you have all the connections. Degree these day does not mean much unless you have plenty of experiences and people that could hook you up w/position. college doesn't emphasize that while you're trying to get your degree. they let you find out the hard way. all of us been brain washed that in order to get a good career, you have to be educated.

a bachelor degree means little now because everyone has one... and while the quantity has gone up the quality has dropped. colleges now offer classes on things like "the philosophy of Little Kim" and "Terrorism - How does it make you feel inside."

the kids who ride the short buses to school are more intelligent that many of today's college professors.

the good news for you is that a degree in Spanish could be useful. obviously you have a second language... you could teach, translate, work in government... you have options.

Now since more people are going to college it is becoming a standard and no longer a "higher learning" degree. It sucks because you spend thousands of dollars and get nothing in return.
