Say a friend, who has a history of being irresponsible to many people, flaked on you at the last minute. What would the difference in responses be if you took it personally than if you didn't take it personally?

its all about security. if you let it bother you and cant handle the truth maybe you should be more responsible so no one will have a reason to flake on you. if it doesnt bother you your a little more secure than you thought

To take something personal means to take it to heart. You are interpreting what they said or did as aimed toward you to hurt you or upset you personally. If you don't take something personal, it means that you were not affected by what the person said or did, basically, you didn't care and you didn't let it bother you.

Since they have a history of it, you should have expected it and not taken it personally as that it was done to YOU. They do it to everybody so it shouldn't be taken personally.
