If you have enthusiasm for what you are doing and go for the ball with all you've got, you won't make a fool of yourself. The coach is going to realize that you're only a freshman and that you don't have the experience the older girls have. I coach a high school team myself and I don't have players who have played their whole lives, nor who participate in the sport year round, so I look for incoming freshmen who show athletic ability, have good attitudes, act competitive and give it their all! If you exhibit the attitude and show that you want to play and are willing to listen and try, it will go a long way in the coach's mind. Hope that's helpful. Best of luck!!!!! (Oh, and by the way...WATCH THE BALL!)

Tryouts for my high school is for an entire week, and I had to ask the same question. This is what I did: Talk to yourself and say you are just going to have fun, and play normally. I'm average myself, and I knew there were seniors that were really good (I'm a freshman). Don't tense up when the coach is looking, cause he might now be looking at you anyways, just don't take anything seriously. Coaches look for control, not power (although power is good), and if you are still nervous, try to make a friend or rally with a friend you already know. It helped me. And TRYOUT it shows you are serious, and you know what you are up against. Good luck! And wish me luck, since I am up for round 2 of try outs today!

Nerves are a part of this game , any sport to be exact. Dr Jim Loher has written extensively on the the tennis anxiety's. OK let me help you by jamming some thoughts down your throat. Keep your feet moving, when you are waiting to return keep jumping up and down so that your body stays relaxed . If they miss the first move in so that you have less time to think on the second serve. Use your rituals . Bounce the ball the same number of times before each serves. Towel off between points . Call the score out before each sport. Always keep tour racquet in your less dominant hand between points and have the head of the racquet is pointing up. Between points do not let anything else enter your mind except the score , example 15 all. 15 all 15all. 30 love . 30 love .... So no weird things enter into your head as you are trying to play. When you are serving keep an idea of what you have done the previous few times. Have an out serve , by this I mean a serve that can get you out of trouble. My best serve was and still is a hard slice out wide. I do not use it however until it is deuce or I am down 15 40. O may have hit a few out wide , but they are flat. Attack on big points, be consistent , but try and make your way in so that he or she has to make the big shots. Remember most errors are made when you try and change the direction of the ball. If you are in trouble just knock it back where it came from . Breathing is so key. Exhale as you hit the shot even a grunt is good it releases the tension in your body. There are a million little things that can help deal with anxiety. The best one is to keep throwing yourself into the un comfortable situations you face. Play a set with your friend which each game starts at 30'40 or break point on your serve. Play tiebreakers during each practice session, Get a good warm up before you play ,try and break a sweat. I hope some of this helps some.

Well, I'm probably too late, so I hope you had a good practice.

Just do what the coach says, don't worry about making a fool of yourself. There's nothing wrong with playing J.V. for a year or two.

Don't worry too much about it! Pratice if you can before the try-out to get ready. If you go in there with the mindset of just having fun, you'll be fine. It is just a game, but play to win! You can do it!

Dont be too nervous because it could mess up your game, just calm down and have fun.
