What do I need to know if I want to learn how to play guitar? I'm pretty good at self-teaching, and I have some pretty good resources to learn from (net, books, etc. ). I'm probably going to get an acoustic guitar, might get electric if i get serious. You can't play an acoustic w/o the amp can you? What guitar should i get for the lowest price? Where should i buy? What brand of guitar? thanks a bunch!

If you want to jump in fast, I'd look into the package low entry guitar deals. Some come with books and guitar tuners. It easy to strum a few chords but if you really want to be good it will require a lot dedication. Yamaha has good ones. Get a friend to go with you. Check the action, play every fret (don't buy if you hear fret buzz), look down the neck of the guitar( should be straight), check the tuners, check the tone. If you can't get a friend, take a little time and read up about guitars.

You definitely need to know how to read tabs, its really simple and you can find out how to do it easily by googling something along the lines of how to read guitar tablature. As far as whether to get an acoustic or an electric it depends on what ou are gonna play, I play both but I play electric more because ts funner. You dont need an amp to play acoustic, you do however need one for electric. You also need a good distortion or effects pedal. Ibanez guitars are pretty nice guitars and they arent really expensive. If you want to upgrade to a really nice guitar try a gibson or something but those are pretty expensive. And always remember the amp/effects pedal(s) always matters more than the guitar, unless the guitar is just a total piece of crap. Hope that helps

there are countless ways to learn nowadays, there is software, countless books, dvd's,videos.try your local music store, and i saw a pretty good software pkg at staples that teaches beginners.you dont need an amp to play acoustic, thats what the hole in the guitar does, makes the sound travel so you dont need an amp.there are alot of good brands of guitars, but when it comes to guitars you get what you pay for,you buy cheap, you get cheap, but some of the best brands are Fender,Gibson,Ibanez, martin, takamine, just to name a few,but for the price you might wanna check out fender or yamaha for acoustics

Go to some stores, and check them out. I'm not really sure what type, but if you take the time to look, you'll find the right one. I taught myself how to play the piano, and now i play at my church. Now i'm working on the guitar too.
