If you are looking for the band that sounds the best live:
Without a doubt TOOL.
They have a very subdued stage presence so basically you get to enjoy their music and visuals without having to worry about staring at the lead singers crotch in spandex!

Some might not consider these bands modern day - but they're still touring, so in my mind that makes them modern.
Rush - June, 4th 2004. Verizon Music Center, Noblesville, IN.
Yes - September 8th, 2004. Star Plaza Theater, Merrillville, IN.
Dream Theater - March 18th 2006. Congress Theater, Chicago, IL.
Coincidently, all of these shows were during the bands anniversary tours.
State-of-the-art lighting, crystal clear sound and top-notch musicianship - as always.
