A lot of computers had their clock set so that it ended at 2000. These computers had to be reset, so that they would continue on past 2000. Many people thought that if all the computers went down accross the world that there would be an economic crash. Lots of people spent a lot fo money on survival stuff, in order to protect themselves from what they thought might happen.
Most important company and government computers were reset before Dec. 31, 2000, so nothing bad happened.

the year 2000. many businesses feared that systems would crash on 1/1/00 as programs were coded with 2-digit years instead of 4-digit years. They thought 1/1/00 would be interpreted as 1/1/1900.

Also, when you "Y2K" something, you are deleting it from a system's point-of-view.

Y= Year
2 = two
K = 1000

It refers to the year 2000 when all the computers were going to melt down because they may not be able to determine it was the year 2000 and not the year 1000.
