whenever i answer a question it shows my total points.What do they mrean?

To encourage participation and reward great answers, Yahoo! Answers has a system of points and levels. The number of points you get depends on the specific action you take.
You earn:
2pts for providing an answer to a question.
1pt for voting for a best answer
1pt daily for signing into answers
10pts if your answer is chosen as best answer to a question
While you can't use points to buy or redeem anything, they do allow everyone to recognize how active and helpful you've been. (And you do need pts to ask questions).
Also, in case you didn't know, it cost 5 points to ask a question. (But, you can get 3 pts back if you select a "best answer" so it's a net loss of 2 pts).

There are draw backs, especially when midnight draws near, and people searching for points weigh in with one word answers to use up their "quota" for the day.
