I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU SOME DATA; THEN I'LL EXPLAIN WHAT IT MEANS.
China is presently the most populous nation with more than
1,306,000,000 people.
Its current rate of natural increase is 0.6 percent.
Its current total fertility rate is 1.7
Its projected population for 2050 is 1,437,000,000.
Its population per square mile is 352.
India is currently the second most populous country with
1,090,000,000 people.
Its current rate of natural increase is 1.6.
its current total fertility rate is 3.1.
Its projected population for 2050 is 1,628,000,000.
Its population per square mile is 856.
The rate of natural increase is the number of births minus the number of deaths per 1,000 existing population. The data above show clearly that India is growing faster than China.
The total fertility rate (TFR) is based on the net reproduction rate and indicates the total number of live births per woman during her lifetime. A TFR of 2.1 is necessary just to maintain population at its current level (Zero Population Growth). As you can see, China is well below that level, and India is well above.
Because of the difference in rates, India will overtake China as the world's most populous country sometime before the year 2050.
India is somewhat more densely populated than China, but it is far from the most densely populated country in the world, as one of your earlier respondants claimed. For example, here are the number of people per square mile for selected countries:
Lebanon...1,121
Bangladesh...2,542
Malta...3,229
Hong Kong...16,494
Singapore...17,541
Monaco...44,000
Macao...58,146
DOUBLING TIME
Doubling Time is the number of years that it would take for a population to double if it continued to grow at its current rate.
China...117 years
India...44 years
Over time, a few tenths of a percentage point makes a huge difference when you're dealing with numbers in the billions.

China...just over 1.3 billion as of a year ago. Their population keeps growing, even though they force abortions. No more than one child per couple, is the law, but it's not working.
