Good question....Yes, turtles shed. All reptiles shed. The reason a reptile sheds is to grow. Those octagon shaped plates are called "scutes". They general shed about once a year. Another reason reptiles shed is if they have had a disease or a cut. They will then shed repeadadly to rid itself from the injury. It does take turtle longer to shed. Do not help the turtle to shed, because if the scute isn't ready to come off it could bleed and then cause infection.

A little peeling occasionally is fine. Turtles shed their skin like
other reptiles, but more continuously. Mine usually shed more for a while, then less or not at all. As long as the shed sking is thin and tranlucent, and you don't see anything unusual on the skin, and the shedding is not excessive, don't worry. If the shedding is continuous, or the skin looks sore or red, or the shedding is very heavy, you may have to deal with a skin fungus. Have your turtle checked by a veterinarian. You may also soak the turtle in an idodine solution twice a day for 15 minutes and keep it warm and dry outside the water overnight for a while.
Turtles shed occasionally the outermost layer of their scutes. They are thin, translucent scutes. If the whole scute is shed and the bone becomes visible, or if shedding is continuous, you may have a fungus problem and should have your turtle inspected by a veterinarian. As an immediate measure, remove the turtle from the water except for a 30 minute bath twice a day; keep it warm and dry; soak twice a day for 15 minutes in iodine solution or sponge off with Nolvosan

Turtles are reptiles. All reptiles shed- but they all do it differently. Turtles shed in rather small peels, that they will often eat given a chance.
A little 'raggity' look to a turtle peeling is normal. To see a lot of peeling over its body is not and is often a sign of something bad.
If it is shedding, the piece should be gone by now. If it is not gone in the next day or so, let us know.

Wow... at first I thought you meant shed as in shed hair like cats. I was going to make some cuttingly sarcastic remark. Anyway, they very well could. If if persists and seems to get worryingly worse (if he's shedding, he'll probably shed more, so that's not too legitimate) then I'd call a vet. Call a vet anyway. Some 'enviormental museums' (you know, you always go to them for field trips) have turtles. If there is one you know of, you could call it. Or try http://www.wikipedia.com and search for turtles. Hope it helps!

Water turtles do shed. Place big, cleaned rocks in his tank, he will want to rub against them to help get the skin off.

Turtles do shed the little sections on their shells. How old is your turtle? This could be from her living corters....is it slimy or have alot of algae? If not then your turtle could be sick...take her to the vet!!!!!
