I am thinking about getting a laptop, the one that I am looking at comes with a built in Wireless LAN... What is this?
I know that it is used to get internet, but do I have to pay monthly for it? Do I need a seperate internet provider as well? I am just confused as to how this works, Im sure Ill find out when I actually go to the store to buy it... but I wanted to find out a little information beforehand. Thanks!!

It's just the reciever. You don't HAVE to pay for it (you can "steal" someone elses signal if they have wireless around you), but if you want to have your home have a wireless setup, you will have to pay for that.

In addition to the built in wireless LAN in your notebook pc, you will need 2 more things for it to work.
1. An internet service provider. If you already have an internet connection, then you don't need another.
2. A wireless router - some popular companies that sell wireless routers are D-link, Linksys and Belkin. If you buy online, then newegg.com has some deals going on.

A wireless LAN or WLAN is a wireless local area network, which is the linking of two or more computers without using wires. It uses radio communication to accomplish the same functionality that a wired LAN has. WLAN utilizes spread-spectrum technology based on radio waves to enable communication between devices in a limited area, also known as the basic service set.

You can actually have DSL and go wirelessly via router and built in WLAN card by creating your own "hot spot" at your home or by using wireless Access Point(AP) of your ISP if there is any.

"know that it is used to get internet, but do I have to pay monthly for it? Do I need a seperate internet provider as well?"

No you do not pay monthly for wifi, this is what your laptop will come with wifi allows you to use wireless at hotspots, coffee shops, airports, hotels etc, you can set up one in your own home as well.

The internet provider you have now will work alls you will need to do is add a wireless access point ( about 40-50$). This wireless access point is connected to your cable or dsl modem.

Just think of wifi as if you were connected directly to your modem but theres no wires.

A wireless man means that you can hook up to the Internet wirelessly. If you live near a Starbucks coffee shop or have access to a free wifi spot that allows people to access the Internet in public places for free then your in luck. I was able to leech of a neighbors wireless router and get access to the Internet, when I didn't have a service provider. If you don't live near someone who has a wifi signal then you'll have to get your own service provider and wireless router. Wi-Fi is neat because you don't have to have wires running throughout your house from one computer to another. Also seeing if you can get on the Internet for free is fun too. You can see other people in your area that also have wi-fi cards. hope this helped.

The wireless LAN simply means that your laptop would have a wireless network card it in. To take advantage of this you would need a wireless access point. This can be added to your existing Internet connection; however, if you are using dial up is it usually not worth it.

If it is high speed (DSL/CABLE) then you would simply need a wireless router to connect.

If you have broadband connection at home, there is no need to get a separate ISP for your laptop. You just need a Wireless Broadband Router. such as linksys WRT54G. It will allow you to shear your Broadband connection between you Desktop and laptop. (no additional monthly fees)

If you have a dial-up connection at home, the wireless is not going to do much for you unless you want to setup a hone network. Sharing the Dial up is not something I recommend.

There are some Wireless HOT spots around. Some are free and some will charge you a fee. For the fee based one sometime they offer you monthly pass.

good luck, and have fun

It means you'll have access to wireless internet where it's available. Many coffee shops and libraries offer free access, but at home you'll have to set up a wireless router to transmit the internet wirelessly. You can continue use your existing internet provider, but you'll have to buy the router.

You don't pay for a separate ISP for using wifi on your new laptop. You'll need a Wifi router connected to your cable or DSL modem.
