The idea is that it will prevent the glass from shattering during a big storm, like a hurricane. After living in Florida for 6 years, I've learned it doesn't do anything but get tape on your windows.

I agree with the first answer. Using tape during bad weather as a safeguard for shards of glass is useless. If you are preparing for a storm, (i.e. hurricane [I'm from Louisiana]), a piece of plywood nailed over the window can help.
Personally, I think if your window is meant to break, it will. No amount of tape or plywood is going to stop it. Chaos Theory.

Two reasons - first - when new glass goes in during construction they want to make sure people see it, as sometimes these openings are used to move material in and out of the building. Second, the fiberous tape actually will help prevent the glass from shattering during installation and also protects it somewhat from wind damage.

Tape on windows is usually for safety precautions, though you have to wonder why you have to mar all that glass with tape if it would have been wiser to put a wall there instead of windows.

To prevent glass shards from flying around when the window breaks. The idea is similar to the safety coating on the front windshield of a car; keep all the broken glass together.

If the glass breaks, it help to keep it from shattering into a bunch of small pieced. They will stay larger...and stick to the tape, so they are easier to clean up.

using tape in the shape of an x on windows can significantly reduce vibrations and it makes it more difficult to spy on by using listening devices outside...
