476 AD - Fall of the Roman Empire, the last emperor is deposed by barbarians, although the fall was a steady decline, this was the year that it finally happened, europe descending into the dark ages after this point
Aug 6, 1588 - Spanish Armada defeated, beginning Britain's hegemy (sp) that lasted several hundred years.
July 3, 1863 - Longstreet's frontal assault with Trimble, Picket and Garnett's 15,000 men marked high tide of the Confederacy, a victory would've meant the end of the Civil War and Southern independence.
December 2, 1942 - first controlled nuclear fission under direction of scientist Enricco Fermi marked the beginning of nuclear haulocaust potention, relying on E-MC2 and other scientists work/knowledge before him.
November 11-12 - Fall of the Berlin Wall, end of Soviet Union as we knew it under the Cold War era, leaving one super power in the world.
Source(s):
Other events include:
Defeat of Germans at Stalingrad
Allied victory at Normandy
Nuclear detonations at Nagasaki/Hiroshima
Cuban Missile Crisis - Sept 27, 1962
JKK's assasination
Defeat of Attila in 451 AD
I like your Big Bang event, but if we included all the cataclysmic, geologic, astronomical and galactic events in history, they'd "outscale" all human events, therefore i didn't list any of them.

I agree with your choices of the Big Bang, the invention of the wheel and the developments in military thinking, new technologies / products and geopolitics caused by WWII. I would add the following two:
1. Discovery of fire - which led to cooking / cuisine and the basis of most power generation, modern engines and modern industry. Hard to imagine how difficult or crude life would be without fire.
2. Invention of the transistor - which led to the computer revolution that continues to influence our lives and shape the future in countless ways.

Learning how to use fire
Invention of agriculture
The Industrial Revolution
Invention of airplane
Invention of nuclear energy
I understand including the Big Bang, but I'm limiting my answers to human history. Otherwise you would also have to include a number of other events in the evolution of species. Fire, obviously one of the first steps in differentiating humans from other animals. Agriculture, because it makes civilization possible, and changes human societies from a nomadic hunting type of existence, to people that have to develop villages and other more permanent types of living arrangements. The Industrial Revolution led to a huge jump in human population and made possible all of the technology we use today. I included the invention of the airplane to make five. I'm not sure it really belongs but it is obviously critical in making the world a much smaller place. Nuclear power seems to be critically important to the future of the world. Either it will cause us to destroy ourselves, or make possible some kind of sustainable future society.

The Big Bang is not proven, just a popular, current theory so you can't really include that.
My 5 in no particular order for what they are worth are:
1. Writing
2. Mathmatics
3. Formal Religion
4.The first circumnavigation
5. Major Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space.

*The numbering does not necessarily mean that I would put them in that order. I was just trying to list five.
