Aside from the government, are Americans generally cool or annoying?

Interesting, rather than cool or annoying. There's so many differences between places in America - more so than here where we're all a bit homogenised. If, like you say, the politics and racism was removed, I think it would be a fantastic place.

Having known several Americans in the UK and studied in America I think that they are really no different than us. They are human, after all. Like any other country, if you go there you'll meet the good, the bad and the ugly. The trouble with our perception of American society and people is that it is distorted by Hollywood movies and TV shows. If you ever get the chance go there and find out first hand what its really like. For the most part I found Americans to be friendly and hospitable, although I found some of their political attitudes very scary. There are cultural differences but that's part of what makes them interesting.

Well I am sure some are fantastic and some are oxygen thieves...same as every other country..!
The Christian fundamentalist ones scare me (any kind of fundamentalist does) , as do the ones down below that little ole Manson/Nixon line...them good ole boys that leave burnin crosses on yer lawn.

The cool thing is if people don't like them they could always pretend to be Canadian and given the USA foreign policy that might be a good idea.

I generally find americans annoying. Before I start just let me say, I am not setting out to be offensive! I do not hate anyone, I am answering a question. I am sure that like every other race americans are a complete mixture of good and bad of superb and indifferent, I am not questioning that. Rather my perception of them as a nation ( albeit tourists seen on holiday). Loud (incredibly loud as though bellowing to one another from across a field, even though they may be next to you at breakfast). Completely oblivious to the fact that sometimes they talk absolute nonsense and make utter fools of themselves! Show offs, not content to be rich, but have to parade their wealth for everyone else to notice and be envious of - my perception of the residents of the us of a!
