Does anyone know if GM is going to recall any of these malibus? After reading other posts this is happening with malibu's from 1997 to 2004. I really don't feel like spending upwards of $400 for a new module and I'm sick of having to wait 10 minutes to drive my car when this acts up.

I've heard of this happening a lot recently. Call your dealer to see if there are any recalls yet. If there are enough service calls and complaints, they will issue a recall, and you will get reimbursed for the cost of the repair/replacement. Until then, make sure your key is clean & bone dry before putting it in the ignition and don't try to restart the car too soon or you'll get to sit and wait another 10 minutes. I'd ask them if there's any way to bypass the module...they are useless anyway.

My '88 Corvette has the kind of key with the little resistor pellet that "tells" the VATS module that it is the right key....(yeah, right.) That thing would disable the starter at the drop of a hat... I got sick to death of waiting 10-20-30 minutes so rather than replace the $500 module I bought a $30 plugin under dash VATS bypass that "feeds" the right resistance to the module, leading it to believe that the right key's always in there.

Unfortunately the system on your car is slightly different so I don't think that would work for you. If you want to explore it, check out mid america designs (madvet.com) They are Vette specialists but it wouldn't hurt to ask if it would work on your later year car, or if something exists that would work on your vehicle.

Hope this info helped somewhat.
