Specifically, my new Macbook Pro arrives tomorrow for me to edit on using Final Cut Pro (I am pretty much new to macs). However I have a great deal of archive material like quicktime movies and photoshop files (ie. all mac compatible' on my Win XP network that I'd like to use on the Mac system. So - do they talk to each other? and if so, what do I need to do?

As long as you have a network to connect both of them into. I run 300+ computers and over a dozen MAC's and they all share information. You simply have to turn on Windows Sharing on the MACs and you can map between the systems.

just make sure you have a switch, router or hub or else if you are trying to connect directly to the mac from your pc you will have a number of night mares

You can go to a local Apple store and talk to one of their "geniuses" at their "genius bar" and they could probably help you accomplish it.
